Georgia games!

Alpharetta, Georga! (near Atlanta)

Dec 14, 2013:
Game 1: Win 6-2 - JJ had 1 goal and 1 assist
Game 2: Win 4-3 - JJ had 2 assists

Dec 15, 2013:
Game 1: Win 4-3 - JJ  had 2 assists (yes, this is correct; same score, same assists as game 2 from yesterday!)
Game 2: Win 7-3 - JJ had 1 goal and 1 assist

When I asked JJ how the weekend went, he was a little disappointed about how he and his team had played. He's turning into a real hockey player! Even with all 4 wins, and him scoring some goals and assists, he wasn't happy about how they played. Maturity as a player is showing up, and I'm very proud of him.

It's here again!

It's hockey time in Nashville TN and the start of another season.

Saturday:

Game 1: Win 6-4 -- JJ had 1 goal and 2 assists.
He also had a +2, which means that he was on the ice when 2 of the goals were made.

Game 2: Win 6-2

Great start to the weekend!

Sunday:

Game 1: Win 6-3 -- JJ got a hat trick! He made 3 goals and had 1 assist.
What a great accomplishment, even with them waking up late and having to hurry to get there! Now, that's the way to get it done, JJ!

Game 2: Win 5-1 -- JJ made 1 goal and had 2 assists

The team is now 4-0.

Awesome hockey weekend!

Off-season

During off-season, the team tries to still keep in shape by having practices when they can get some ice-time.

They also do dry-land practicing to keep conditioned. Other opportunities come up every now and then to attend one-day or weekend clinics and other training arenas. JJ tries to go to as many of these as he can.

It won't be long now (later this month, maybe?) that it will be time for tryouts for next season.

Final tournament

This weekend, the team traveled to Nashville TN to play in their final hockey tournament this season. This ends the official hockey season for 2012-2013. It came with some bumps and bruises along the way, so it was an interesting season. Next season...watch out!

Sportsmanship

Because JJ hasn't been able to play hockey due to this concussion, it's been hard on him. But, being the true team player that he is, with true sportsmanship attitude, he's going to the games anyway to support his team mates. This was his decision, and it shows the character that he has as an ice hockey player. We are proud of you, JJ!

Injury update

Earlier this month, JJ had a concussion because a player slammed him against the boards in a game. Today, JJ went back to the doctor for a followup visit. The doctor did not release him, so he still can't play hockey for another month. It's been tough for JJ. There aren't many more games left in the official season. He's practicing with the goalie only at practices because he can't get out there and fly like he normally does.

Birthday Hockey Weekend!

JJ turned 12 on February 3rd, and he spent his birthday in Atlanta GA playing hockey! For a hockey player, there isn't a better way to spend a birthday, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, it ended up being a bad weekend for JJ. He was hit from behind by a player on the other team, who rammed JJ's head against the boards head-on. They thought he was okay, but at school a day or two later, he had to be picked up because he was dizzy and sick. As it turned out, JJ had a concussion and the doctor told him that he couldn't play hockey or any other activity for a month. JJ was not happy about this, but his health comes first. Hockey is a very tough sport!

Practice time

It's practice time again.

Practicing as much as possible is how a GOOD team becomes GREAT!

Memphis games!!

This weekend is a big weekend for the hockey team! They're back in Memphis, playing and having a great time doing it. The weekend shaped up to be a not so good weekend for winning, but that's okay.

Here's the breakdown:

For format, each team had 3 one-hour games (one on Saturday, and two on Sunday morning). They warmed up for 2-3 minutes and then took a minute between periods.

Saturday December 15, 2012: lost 6-0 - JJ played well. The team just couldn't make it happen, though. Still, it was a good game and we always love watching JJ play hockey. Kevin, Kristen and the kids came out to watch him, which was great!

Sunday December 16, 2012: They played two games. Lost 5-0 in the first game. Score unknown for the second game.

More games! They were able to play a 6-7 minute 'game' during the first intermission of the Riverkings game on Saturday night. (The Riverkings played Pensacola.) They divided up into two teams and played for about 7 minutes, changing it up every 45 seconds or so, depending on how many players they ended up having.

Practices

November 20th...last day of school today for JJ because of the Thanksgiving holiday. What could be better than a last day of school except going to hockey practice that night? They've had several practices going on at the ice house in Olive Branch this past week. Lots of hard work and practice to do before their very busy December schedule. They have more practices, travel games, and scrimmages during the Riverkings games here. JJ says "bring it on!" He's ready!

TPH Clinic

This weekend, on Friday and Saturday, JJ is at the TPH Clinic.

Some of the things they did are:

...skating drills
...shooting drills
...off-ice workouts

The clinics that JJ attends are always good and he learns a lot and has fun!

Knoxville games

November games in Knoxville TN

On Saturday, Nov 17th, they played two games.
Game 1 vs Knoxville, loss 09
Game 2 vs Atlanta was a loss 1-5. According to Jeremy's text, "JJ is checking like crazy"!

And, on Sunday, Nov 18th, a milestone event occurred...

JJ got thrown out of a game!

Yes, you read that right. He had been getting penalties all weekend. And, in this last game, a player from the other team was going after JJ's teammate. Well, JJ being who he is, he decided to get even and went after the player on the other team and slashed him. Got caught. Ref threw him out of the game. And, in the end, the game was a loss, with a score of 5-1.

October games

October 20
vs Kennesaw, loss 2-5. JJ made one of the goals
vs Nashville, loss 1-5. JJ said that he had the assist but they didn't give it to him. It happens.

October 21
vs Atlanta, win 6-4. This is their first win for this season. JJ went after another player twice his size a few times. He certainly doesn't back down!
vs Duluth, win 2-1. JJ had one assist

Monday, October 15, 2012

Decatur games

October 13, 2012...

vs Atlanta, loss 3-8 with one goal by JJ
vs Knoxville, loss 0-10

October 14, 2012...
vs Atlanta, loss 0-10 but JJ played a good game
vs Duluth, loss 3-6 - JJ had one goal and one assist

Not a great start to the season, but that's okay. They scored some and JJ is playing well.

2012-2013 season is here!

The 2012-2013 season is here!

In Decatur AL, they had a pickup game today. They lost 5-1, but JJ was credited with the assist on the goal. He got around the best defenseman in the league! The other team was 2nd year (pee wee and older).

Game time

June 29th

Beat Huntsville 4-3

JJ had 2 assists!

Nashville again and again...

Another hockey weekend in Nashville, TN! JJ is on spring break this week, so they were able to leave during the day for his first game Friday afternoon.

Friday, March 16th: Loss 1-4. Apparently, the game wasn't called even close to fair. JJ's team kept getting penalties for things that they didn't even do. The other team didn't get penalties that they should have gotten! This is just my opinion, but why do refs do that? It doesn't matter if their son or daughter, or nephew, or neighbor's uncle's son is on the team. Refs are called to be fair, nonjudgmental, and not biased against any team or favorable to any team.

Good news, though. Once again, JJ made both goals in the shootout! JJ, that's awesome!

Saturday, March 17th: Loss 2-6. JJ made a goal. Yay!

He also got in a fight with with two guys from the other team. Yep, two at once! They hit our goalie with their stick way after the whistle was blown. The result? Those kids got nailed by JJ, who took them on even though he was much smaller than they were. While Jeremy (and JJ's grandaddy!) are trying to teach JJ fairness in hockey, when to check and when not to, when to stand up for himself, don't start anything but defend yourself, things like that...still, we can't help but be proud that JJ stood up for his teammate like he did.

Saturday, March 17th: WIN 5-2 against Agame. JJ made a goal and had an assist!

Sunday, March 18th: WIN 4-1 against Agame. JJ made another goal!

Invite to Nashville games

JJ was invited to play on another team this weekend in Nashville. He did great! And, he's probably having fun there as well because they stayed at the Opryland Hotel. You know...that huge gigantic hotel where you can get lost just going from the check-in desk to your room! Jeremy's text said: "We're here and had at least a mile walk from the parking lot to our room".

They played one game on Friday, so JJ got a day out of school. They had games on Saturday and Sunday, as well as some skills competition. In the showdown, JJ was the only one to make both goals in a shootout competition. Way to go, JJ!!

Friday game: WIN, 5-4. JJ had one goal.

Saturday game: WIN, 6-2. JJ had two goals. This was against the Mid South Ice House!

Sunday games:
game 1: Lost 6-8. (Can't win them all) JJ did great, though. He had 3 goals and 3 assists.
game 2:  They played the same team that they lost against earlier today. This is the championship game for this tournament. At the end of the game, some of the kids got JJ against the boards, and he hit the boards fairly hard. He came home in pain as he was hurting pretty bad. Coaches?? Refs?? Parents of those kids who did this?? Just got to shake my head sometimes, but it's over with and JJ will be fine. I'm still proud of the way he played. Get 'em next time, JJ!!!
