It's practice time again.

Practices

November 20th...last day of school today for JJ because of the Thanksgiving holiday. What could be better than a last day of school except going to hockey practice that night? They've had several practices going on at the ice house in Olive Branch this past week. Lots of hard work and practice to do before their very busy December schedule. They have more practices, travel games, and scrimmages during the Riverkings games here. JJ says "bring it on!" He's ready!

Practice time...

2 foot jumps

backwards to the blue line

down on one knee and right back up

down on belly and right back up

work, practice, work, practice...

That's the way these hockey players now become AWESOME hockey stars later!

LIttle Rock AR practice/scrimmage

This morning was a practice/scrimmage in Little Rock AR. It went okay, with JJ scoring 4 goals.

When I asked JJ earlier this week where they were going today, he said Little Rock.

"Remember, Mammaw, that's the rink that's always so cold and you had to go outside to warm up!"

Yes, I remember...it was FREEZING in there!

JJ said that once he gets out on the ice, though, he warms up. No wonder, with that awesome playing he does!

Practice Jan 5 2012

I asked JJ how his practice was last night, and he said it was ok. When they left the house, they forgot his socks and jersey, so he wore his backup socks and borrowed a jersey.

One good thing: the other coach was out of town so Jeremy took the team through their drills and scrimmage. JJ said that his daddy told him that was a fun practice for him! It was for JJ, too!

Decatur ice time!

JJ traveled to Decatur AL for some ice time over the weekend. They had a couple of practices set up, along with scrimmage with Point Mallard.

Saturday
1:50-2:50 - practice
4:45 - chalk talk in the locker room
5:40-6:50 - scrimmage with Point Mallard

Sunday:
9:15a-10:15a - pratice
12:10-1:50 - scrimmage with Point Mallard

JJ did great! On Saturday in the scrimmage, he scored 4 goals and had 8 assists. The final score was 15-0! Afterward, they went to eat at Applebee's.

They won again on Sunday, with a score of 14-1. JJ scored 2 goals and had 7 assists!

This was only practice and scrimmages, but what a way to start the season! He and his daddy had some good quality father/son time, and JJ had fun.

Way to go, JJ!

Early morning practice

JJ's ice hockey practice started at 6:00 this morning. Very early! I asked JJ about how his practice went and he said okay. They worked on the same things that they worked on for the past two practices:

--run drills
--shoot-out
--skating
--shooting
--passing

Nothing out of the ordinary happened...just hard work and ice hockey!

Practicing harder

Well, the time has come for JJ to get a little more serious about the game of hockey. (More serious?!? Is that possible?)

He is having to work a little harder during practice, and pay more attention to what he's doing. They're working at learning "plays", situations to score goals. The coaches are trying to teach them how to plan ahead in order to be in the best possible position to score a goal or to pass it to help someone else score a goal.

Some of the things he did in his practice tonight was:
--run drills
--had a shoot-out
--worked on skating, shooting, passing

He had practice last night and tonight, and will have practice very early tomorrow morning.

Work hard, JJ! You're on your way!

Huntsville AL games

Jeremy and JJ traveled to Alabama this weekend for practice on Saturday and then two games on Sunday. Being on the travel team means that JJ has a dress code now! He had to wear a white shirt with khaki pants.

Today (Sunday), they played two games. In the first game, they lost 8-2. Jeremy said that "the other team is really good". They lost the second game, too. The score was 11-0. JJ didn't score any goals this time (but he usually does, so the other team must have been very good).

There will be days like this and games like these two, so I hope JJ learns to accept it and move on, and just play all that much harder the next time.

Just a comment: Memphis doesn't have an ice rink, so they don't get ice time as much as other teams. Maybe one of these days, Memphis will wise up and build an ice rink instead of putting all of their money into basketball...ya think?

We're proud of you anyway, JJ, and we hope that you had a good time.

Practice in Little Rock

JJ has practice in Little Rock today with his travel team, the Memphis Blues. It seems that being on this travel team is going to mean that he travels alot, even for practice, not just games. It's good experience for him and he seems to be enjoying it.

Have a great practice, JJ! Safe travels!

...Update: Practice got cancelled because the zamboni broke! Can't have ice hockey without a zamboni!

Dec 7 practice

Pictures from JJ's practice today...It seemed he had trouble staying up today, but he did okay except for that. He always tries to go too fast, wanting to get ahead of everyone. He still has problems stopping. He does better at times than others, so he's improving.
